Cabinet Approves Increasing Supreme Court Judge Strength to 37

The Union Cabinet recently approved the Supreme Court Amendment Bill 2026, increasing the maximum judicial strength from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India. This legislative amendment to the 1956 Act aims to enhance the apex court's operational efficiency and ensure speedier justice delivery. The increased expenditure for the new judges and supporting staff will be directly drawn from the Consolidated Fund of India.
